We got on the water at 6:30 and at 8:30 we were done. The trout were hitting on LSU colors plastic under a popping cork. We were in Lake Raccourci by Philo Brice island. I tried top water she dog with no luck on trout but did catch a 26Lbs Bull Red on 15lbs line.

In the photos

Brandt Glover with our catch of the day

Derek Glover with the bull red fish.

Well what started out to be one of those “head to the coast and tie everything down in preparation for T.S. Bonnie at the camp” turned out to be a Red Fish Blast! My Bride and I headed for our camp mid morning on Friday to make sure everything was taken care of around the camp in preparation for Tropical Storm Bonnie which was scheduled to make land fall very close to our camp late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. You never can be prepared enough for what might happen!
After arriving and checking on everything my lovely wife suggested we take a quick fishing trip as the weather was perfect. No winds and beautiful skies. She didn’t have to twist my arm much and we were off to one of our favorite “Honey Holes”. She was driving the Boat and I was site seeing and as soon as she pulled up to the spot, I jumped up and put the trolling motor down. Within a very few minutes I noticed a lot of movement close to the bank and immediately knew what that was! It was a school of Reds working down the bank. It was also a very big school! Best guess as I watched the tails and water it looked like 30+ Reds and they were just swimming down the bank. Now that will get your heart pumping! I headed closer and told Annette to get ready and we would try to cast at the same time. I pulled to within casting distance and we both through at them. I was using a spinner bait and she was using the gold spoon. As soon as the baits hit the water all hell broke loss with Reds running everywhere! We both were hooked up and mine was screaming drag out and heading to the middle of the lake. Annette’s stayed and ran down the bank. Other Reds were running under the boat and passing so close in the clear water. It was so cool to watch. After a very long battle on light tackle we both boated our fish. Mine was 13 lbs and Annette’s was 8lbs. The rest of the day was spent looking for more schools to chase. We would find some and have no takers. I guess just not hungry or they had something else on their minds. As we listened to the weather it seemed like the storm was going to break up so we decided to stay and try to fish the next morning. Annette’s Brother came in Friday night as he has really been wanting to catch a double digit Red on light tackle. Well Saturday morning we woke to light winds so off we went back to the same cove from the day before. In no time we were chasing schools of Reds. My Brother-in-law (BIL) got his wish with a very nice 14 pounder on a spinner bait. This big fish gave him one heck of a fight. The rest of the morning we had a blast chasing schools and catching Reds! I did catch a real neat multi-spot Red which made for a cool picture. Again watching the weather and listening to the news it looked like the storm was breaking up and would pass more to the north of us. So we stayed Saturday night for a try on Sunday morning. Well to make a long story short we arrived Sunday morning at the same spot and as soon as I put the trolling motor down we started getting calls for our neighbors back home saying that our neighborhood had flooded from heavy rains. So we heading back in without wetting a line and packed up and went home to find water in our house! So we spent all of Sunday afternoon mopping water out of parts of the house. I would have rather been fishing!!!! We ended the weekend with 21 Reds and one Black Drum. We had 3 Reds hit the double Digit!
Summer is winding down fast but we still have a lot of fishing to do. We have the “Georgia Boys” coming in on the weekend of the 7th Aug. and my “Baby Girl” oldest daughter and her Boy Friend coming on the weekend after that. The Big Bulls will start running real good along the coast next month which is always a blast along with the Red Fish Rodeo on Labor Day. So lots more fishing yet!
Hope all is well on your end and like always we hope you can join us for some of this fun!
Note; All fish caught in the making of this e-mail were released in gallon Ziploc bags and will be treated to a hot oil bath at a later date! J
Take care

Chris J. Ducote
