Drawdown Scheduled for Hardwater Lake

Drawdown Scheduled for Hardwater Lake

(Aug. 20, 2014) – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in conjunction with the Grant Parish Police Jury have scheduled a drawdown for Hardwater Lake to begin on Tuesday, September 2 to control nuisance aquatic vegetation.

The water level will be lowered 4 feet from pool stage.  Water fluctuations are proven to yield significant beneficial effects for fisheries and aquatic vegetation control.

Control gates will be closed no later than December 31, 2014, and with normal rainfall, the lake will return to pool stage well in advance of the spring fish spawning season.

Although the lake will not be closed to fishing, caution is advised of boaters during the low water period, as boat lanes will not provide normal clearance for underwater obstructions.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is charged with managing and protecting Louisiana’s abundant natural resources.  For more information, visit us at www.wlf.louisiana.gov on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ldwffb or follow us on Twitter @LDWF.

For additional information regarding the drawdown, contact Ricky Moses, LDWF Biologist Manager, at rmoses@wlf.la.gov or (318) 487-5885.

For press inquiries contact Ashley Wethey at awethey@wlf.la.gov or (225) 721-0489.

Working Rice Lands Worth $3.5 Billion of Managed Wetland Habitat

Working rice lands worth $3.5 billion of managed wetland habitat

New study finds high value of rice agriculture for waterfowl, other wildlife

USA Rice Federation
Michael Klein (703) 236-1458
mklein@usarice.com
@usaricenews

WASHINGTON – May 6, 2014 – There’s no doubt that rice, waterfowl and wetland habitats work cohesively to form a perfect ecosystem, and a recently published report puts a monetary value on those existing rice lands. Authored by Ducks Unlimited scientists for The Rice Foundation, the study found that the cost of attempting to replace rice lands with natural wetland habitat would exceed $3.5 billion.

“I’ve been in the rice business for more than three decades, and know firsthand that rice agriculture is a multifunctional agro-ecosystem,” said DU President George Dunklin. “In addition to nutritious food for people, rice lands provide critical habitat for waterfowl and countless other migratory birds and wetland-dependent species.”
>
> All three rice-growing regions of the United States – the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV), Gulf Coast and California’s Central Valley– overlap directly with the continent’s most important waterfowl wintering grounds.

“Rice production and farming are important components to ensuring we meet the population goals set forth in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan,” said DU CEO Dale Hall. “This study is an excellent tool we can utilize to show policymakers and waterfowl managers just how critical rice lands are to waterfowl populations.”

According to the study, more than 40 percent of the food resources available to wintering dabbling ducks along the Central Valley and Gulf Coast derive from flooded rice fields. The values for geese are higher because of dry-land feeding.

“The importance of a strong, viable rice industry goes well beyond the family farmers, rice mills and merchants, to national conservation efforts,” said USA Rice Federation President and CEO Betsy Ward. “What’s good for rice, is good for ducks.”

Unfortunately for waterfowl and rice farmers alike, all three regions face challenges as it relates to keeping rice on the land. Water supplies for rice production are under increasing pressure in all areas, and many producers may be forced to adopt practices that provide far fewer benefits for waterfowl.

Long-term declines in rice acreage on the Gulf Coast are especially worrisome with the simultaneous dramatic loss of coastal prairie and marsh habitats. Halting this decline and flooding a greater percentage of rice acreage will be necessary to meet the needs of Gulf Coast waterfowl in the future.

“We applaud the many rice producers who integrate extra conservation measures into their rice production to maintain water quality and provide much-needed waterfowl habitat,” said Jason Weller, Chief of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. “The partnership between DU, USA Rice and the U.S. Department of Agriculture offers increased technical and financial assistance to help producers accomplish these goals on their land.”

Because of the significance of rice lands for waterfowl habitat, the two groups formed the USA Rice-DU Stewardship Partnership in 2013 to advocate for sound agriculture- and conservation-related policies and to promote the important ecosystem benefits of rice agriculture.

Ducks Unlimited Inc. is the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to conserving North America’s continually disappearing waterfowl habitats. Established in 1937, Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than 13 million acres thanks to contributions from more than a million supporters across the continent. Guided by science and dedicated to program efficiency, DU works toward the vision of wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever. ALBC State High School Bass Fishing Championship Results

ALBC State High School Bass Fishing Championship

By Philip Timothy
For The Town Talk

ZWOLLE – Ok, maybe the second annual Association of Louisiana Bass Clubs State High School Bass Fishing Championship doesn’t need to take any baby steps.

Friday afternoon at the event’s weigh-in it was evident this fledgling tournament has definitely leaped past the baby step stage and gone straight into a dead sprint.

On hand were 19 teams, 102 anglers representing 13 high schools. The numbers are pretty impressive considering a year ago there were only seven teams, 37 anglers representing five high schools in the inaugural tournament.

“Amazing,” said Dan Touchet, former ALBC president and the driving force behind the establishment of the high school division. “Would you just look at all these people – the kids, the adult sponsors and their parents.”

In just its second year of existence, the tournament has made a huge leap forward in both attendance and popularity.

“I’m definitely encouraged by the numbers,” said Craig Lewis, tournament director. “I am thoroughly impressed with today’s turnout and I believe these numbers are only going to grow as word continues to spread.

“And I think next year if the schools in the southern part of the state or the northeast part of the state join, our numbers could double … maybe even triple,” said Lewis. “Sponsors are jumping on board because they realize how fast this event is growing.”

Lewis said bass clubs are perfect for all those kids that don’t play football, basketball or baseball but want to compete in a high school sport.

“Schools are very willing to embrace bass clubs,” Lewis said, “because it allows these kids to participate in a sport they are good at doing. A lot of these kids have been fishing for most of their young lives and bass fishing appeals to them.”

While Lewis has spent a lot of time promoting these bass clubs to the schools, the kids themselves have taken over spreading the word.

“The competition between schools is a natural, especially the schools around central Louisiana,” he said. “They know each other and some even fish together. So, there is a lot of good nature give and take, and a little bragging to the winner.”

Natchitoches Central Team 1, which was second last year, captured the championship by weighing an impressive 12-fish, 33.18 pound bag of bass, 3.5 pounds better than Pineville High School Team 1, who finished with 29.64 pounds.

“We spread out. One team fished the San Miguel flats (Patroon Bayou) and the other two teams went south,” said NCHS team captain John Linger. “The two teams who went south ran into a number of Elite Series fishermen who were fishing in the Bassmaster Elite Series out Cypress Bend.

“We didn’t start catching fish until around lunch but the other two boats caught most of their fish early in the morning on top water baits,” Linger said. “We all caught quite a few fish but we finished with 20 keepers. My partner and I had six of those keepers and the other two boats combined for about 14 more. It enabled us to cull to get our 12 weigh fish.”

Teammate Brenton Lester, who caught the biggest bass amongst the three boats, said he was using a 5X crank bait when he snagged a big female bass.

“I called for the net but it was broken,” he said. “I was nervous it might get off without the net.”

And the bass almost succeeded as it gave Lester a run for his money before he was finally able to get his prize into the boat with the help of his partner.

“It got my line tangled up in the trolling motor, went under the boat and shot to the back of the boat. It took me almost six minutes before Nick (Nicholas Wiggins) was finally able to lip it and get it into the boat,” Lester said.

Oak Hill (29.45), Tioga High School Team 1 (28.31), Natchitoches Central Team 2 (28.18), North DeSoto Team 1 (27.48), Grant High School Team 1 (26.54), Alexandria Senior High (25.87), Montgomery Team 1 (25.19) and Grant High Team 2 (25.11).

Heading up the second group was Northwood (25.09), Buckeye (24.01), Menard Team 1 (21.95), Menard Team 2 (17.39), Tioga Team 2 (12.38), North DeSoto Team 2 (11.36), Pineville Team 2 (10.78), Montgomery Team 2 (8.80) and Glenmora.

“Listen closely to the totals as I call them out,” ALBC President Elray Bourdreaux told the crowd, “and you’ll see just how competitive it was to get into the Top 10. All that separated many of these teams were tenths and hundredths of an ounce.”

The competition for Big Bass was equally tight as Menard’s Ashton Futrell took the honor by just one-hundreth of an ounce. The second biggest bass of the tournament was caught by a member of Tioga’s Team 1.

Futrell’s 5.44-pound lunker came as somewhat of a surprise to the 15-year-old.

“I was fishing a red watermelon-colored plastic Fluke worm. I had cast my bait into the water but I had to let it sit because I was working on the trolling motor. I got the trolling motor fixed and when I picked up my rod I saw the line was running off with it.”

Futrell, who was fishing on the Texas side in five to six feet of water, knew it was a good fish as soon as he set the hook.

“It made a little run but I managed to get it into the boat pretty quick,” said Futrell. “It was a good fish but I’ve caught bigger (9.5 pounds) here.”
